I am often asked how to resize photographs or pictures without buying expensive graphics or DTP software, or resorting to downloading large software packages for a one-off job. There are many reasons for wanting to do this, the most common being that a smaller image is easier to e-mail or upload to the internet (for example to Facebook). Hidden away in Windows is MS Paint, a program that will quickly re-size your image rendering it more manageable and easier to work with. 1. Open MS Paint
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint
2. Open your picture file by clicking the File menu and selecting Open
3. Select Image menu, and then select Stretch/Skew
4. Change the Horizontal to (for example) 20% and the Vertical to the same amount
5. Click OK
6. This should be the result
7. Click File and then Save and this will overwrite the original image. Alternatively, to save in another location or with a new file-name (retaining the original image), select File and then Save As... .
For those using Linux based operating systems, use GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). After opening the image select the Image menu and then Scale Image. Gimp is an excellent Open Source (free) graphics package which can be used with Windows. I wrote about it here, and can be downloaded from the Gimp website.
